From coil to can Manufacturing aluminium beverage cans sustainably

We produce aluminium strip used to manufacture beverage cans in many different sizes and specifications. Our high-quality, sustainable products are known and trusted by customers all over the world, including some of the largest and best-known international producers of aluminium beverage packaging.

Fresh, chilled and recyclable: Aluminium offers impressive properties. Manufacturing high-quality cans and can-ends with our sustainable production process

Aluminium is once again gaining in popularity. This is due to its exceptional technical properties, as well as the fact that it is recyclable and thermally conductive, not to mention extremely lightweight. The result is aluminium beverage cans that are 100% recyclable, and which keep their contents chilled and fresh, without affecting their taste, along the entire path from producer to consumer.

The volume of aluminium beverage cans used in Europe will increase by around 10 billion cans over the next five years. We are pleased to support this growth and to play a decisive role with our high-quality aluminium. In addition, recycling is also one of the services we are happy to provide to promote sustainability.

There is good reason behind the growth in global demand: Aluminium beverage cans are impermeable to light and air, so they protect liquids from external influences and keep them fresh for longer. They also feature an integrated cooling effect that allows the contents to be cooled with minimal energy use. Other benefits include their durability and light weight, which makes it possible to transport large volumes of aluminium beverage cans using less space.

We also take care of the reuse of aluminium cans because, after all, aluminium can be recycled infinitely without any loss of quality. This is how we ensure a circular product life cycle.

VERO. The truth.

“Becoming a recycling company” – that is our endeavor. And this claim is already embodied in our VERO products today - because they produce 30 % fewer CO2 emissions than the European average. While others only talk about it, we have gone about verifying it.
In the interests of complete transparency.

Transparency at every step of the supply chain. How our aluminium beverage can products are made: It takes multiple stages of production before our aluminium strip is ready to be turned into cans. The metal is recycled and cast into rolling ingots. These are processed into coils at the world's largest aluminium smelting and hot-rolling mill Alunorf and refined in Grevenbroich for the can-end manufacturers to use. With production widths of up to two meters, a single rolled coil can be used to make 10 million can tabs, 3.5 million can ends or 700,000 can bodies.

From Speira you can always expect the highest quality. Because our plants can achieve even the smallest tolerances. To keep everything as efficient as possible, we monitor the production process using state-of-the-art quality-control technologies.

ORBIS. The truthfulness.

By using recycled materials, we reduce energy on a large scale without compromising on quality. At least 75% of external scrap is used for this purpose. In addition, there are even more sustainable products with a recycled content of 85% or 95%.

And that’s not all.

Our products with 75 %, 85 % or 95 % external scrap are so outstanding that this is also reflected in the name.  Certified and labeled, they represent true sustainability.

We recycle 100,000 metric tons of aluminium each year – our sustainable production and effective recycling

By using aluminium to make cans and can-ends, we are using a raw material with many environmental benefits. In fact, aluminium beverage cans are the most sustainable beverage packaging type, leaving behind a significantly lower CO2-footprint than glass or plastic.

There is a good reason for our recycling activities too, as the production process generates fewer emissions, and aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without any loss of quality. Using aluminium over and over again is not only good for the planet, it's also extremely energy efficient. In fact, it takes 95% less energy to recycle the cans than it does to produce new aluminium.

At Speira, we are working hard to raise the beverage can recycling rate across Europe. We are driving forward the lean recycling process of the future, with even shorter transport routes. Today, we are already using our own recycling plant, which recycles 100,000 metric tons of aluminium each year. The capacity of our plant is equivalent to nearly all the beverage cans used in Germany in one year; and it takes just 60 days between the can being used and then finding its way back onto store shelves.
