Aluminium sheets for traffic signs and license plates

The use of aluminium sheet for traffic signs and license plates has proven itself over many decades in our constantly changing world. Speira, as a leading manufacturer of rolled aluminium products, offers comprehensive and individual material solutions in this area. Our fundamental goal is to dovetail the processes of using and reusing aluminium. We have therefore set ourselves the task of redefining the limits in rolling and recycling and offering innovative solutions for the transportation sector.

Aluminium sheets for traffic signs Light weight – great benefit

Speira is constantly developing sustainable and innovative products. Our aluminium sheets for traffic signs, gantries and signage systems are proof of this. Tailored to local markets and regulations, we offer specific alloy and condition combinations to produce traffic signs made from solid aluminium. Based on our many years of expertise, combined with the use of an above-average recycled content, we have developed solutions. Our material makes a significant contribution to reducing the carbon footprint of our products and our customers' products.

In addition to using alloys with a high recycled content, we pay particular attention to the flatness of the aluminium sheets for traffic signs. This ensures excellent processability, particularly in the production of sign blanks. A clean and oil-free surface is also of particular importance to us, as it guarantees optimum adhesion for paints and coatings.

Flat rolled aluminium for road signs Lightweight, durable and 100 % recyclable

Street signs made of aluminium standing in front of a forest.

The use of flat rolled aluminium for road signs offers several unbeatable advantages. Firstly, the material is extremely lightweight, which makes both transportation and installation much easier. Secondly, our aluminium is corrosion-resistant, almost maintenance-free, and durable, ensuring that solid aluminium road signs can withstand even the harshest environmental conditions. In addition, aluminium is a 100 % recyclable material, making it an environmentally friendly choice for sign manufacturing. If a traffic sign made of solid aluminium can no longer be reused after several decades in service, it can be returned to any normal aluminium cycle without the need for costly processing.

The robustness and flexibility of aluminium sheet for traffic signs makes it possible to produce signs in different shapes and sizes, from small priority signs in built-up areas to large freeway signs.

Innovative aluminium sheet solutions for traffic signs and license plates

Traffic signs and license plates are indispensable elements that contribute to safety and orientation on our roads. They must withstand extreme weather conditions, while retaining their functionality and visibility. Our selection of product variants provides an ideal basis for optimally meeting the specific requirements of different sign types and their mounting structures.

Speira supplies sheets in alloy groups 3xxx and 5xxx to produce small, medium, and large signs as well as license plates in thicknesses of 1-4 mm and with a maximum width of 2100 mm. We also offer alloy 5083 with optimized bending properties in thicknesses of 8-12 mm for the construction of aluminium sign bridges. We also focus on transparency: Our rolled product is suitable for the production of traffic signs with RAL quality seal GZ 628 and in accordance with EN 12899-1.

Take advantage of all the benefits offered by our intelligent VIA Signum solutions and secure a significant market advantage. Through our deep understanding and commitment to high-quality aluminium sheet products in the transportation sector, we offer a high level of expertise. With our focus on quality, innovation, and sustainability, we always strive to provide the best solutions for your requirements.

For over 30 years, Speira has been one of the leading global suppliers of pre-treated and painted aluminium strip for the production of license plates. Our focus is on environmentally friendly processes and raw materials, characterized by our recycling-based alloys EN AW-3105B and EN AW-3005A. These make it possible to produce license plates with a reduced CO2 footprint, as the alloys consist of approx. 40 % post-consumer scrap.

Speira's unique electrochemical pre-treatment ensures excellent adhesion for reflective films and coatings on the surface of the aluminium. Our products are manufactured and tested according to EN 1396, EN 13523, EN 485, EN 573.

With our quality assurance, including ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates, we guarantee the highest standards. These enable us to provide advanced and environmentally friendly solutions that minimize our ecological footprint and meet the highest quality standards.

FAQ: Aluminium for traffic signs and license plates

Aluminium alloys for traffic signs and license plates are selected for their good formability, high strength, and corrosion resistance. Typical choices include:

  • 1000 series for soft, highly formable base materials
  • 3000 series for medium strength and good surface quality
  • 5000 series for robust, weather-resistant signs—mandatory for traffic signage in Germany due to outstanding corrosion resistance and durability
  • 8000 series for special applications with added requirements for strength or formability

An important detail for Germany: the 5000 series is mandated for traffic signs because of its exceptional corrosion resistance and long service life.

Carefully controlled manufacturing methods deliver smooth, flawless surfaces ideal for film lamination, printing, and embossing. Tight tolerances and a uniform material structure ensure long service life and consistent quality.

Aluminium has become the industry standard for signs because it is lightweight, durable, and highly resistant to corrosion. The material maintains dimensional stability and weather resistance even when exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations and moisture. The back surface offers ideal properties for coating with non-reflective paint systems.

Instead of coating the reverse side with a non-reflective paint system, the surface can also be blasted, brushed, or ground. The front receives a reflective film that typically needs replacement after approximately ten years, while the aluminium sign itself continues in service. A uniform, clean surface is critical at this stage to ensure long-lasting adhesion of film or printing, which is why a targeted pretreatment is carried out before coating to enhance adhesion. This combination ensures high UV resistance, extended service life, and sustained visibility in road traffic.

Solid aluminium signs are made from a single material and can therefore be recycled without separation. Sandwich panels, by contrast, contain a plastic core that makes material-pure recycling significantly more difficult. In addition to better recyclability, solid aluminium signs offer high stability, long service life, and a smooth, uniform surface that is ideal for printing and film application.

Advantages of solid aluminium signs:

  • 100% recyclable, uniform material
  • High stability and long service life
  • Resistant to UV radiation and temperature changes
  • Smooth, uniform surface for printing and film application
  • Sustainable and economically efficient in a closed loop

Drawbacks of sandwich panels:

  • Composite material with plastic core, difficult to recycle
  • Complex disposal, higher material loss

Aluminium combines several advantages, including low weight, exceptional corrosion resistance, and high structural stability. Unlike plastic plates, which cannot be recycled, or steel plates, which corrode when exposed to moisture or road salt, aluminium remains dimensionally stable and functional for many years. It can be embossed, laminated with reflective films, and remelted at the end of its service life without any loss of quality.

Aluminium is fully recyclable and retains its material quality throughout the process. Old signs can be remelted and reused without any loss in performance. Its long lifespan and the ability to continue using the base material even after replacing the reflective film significantly reduces raw material consumption. Since aluminium is processed in pure form, no mixed waste is created. This makes the recycling rate in the signage sector particularly high. When recycled aluminium is used in production from the start, the overall CO2 footprint is reduced even further.
