Amager Bakke Façade cladding with TECTURA Giant 5083

The Amager Bakke project, designed by well- known architect firm BIG of Denmark, is an example of perfect cooperation between the architect, the facade builder and us. Involved from the very first stages of facade development, to mock-up construction and re-design, until final delivery of some few thousand cut-to-order pieces, we have been able to integrate our material know- how into this project, leading to a lightweight, durable and cost- effective solution for this unique facade – scaling down material usage to about 50% compared to the originally planned construction.

City: Copenhagen

Country: Denmark

Architect: BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group)

Builder: Amager Resource Center

Facade Constructor: Sipral

Material type: TECTURA Giant (EN AW5083 H111 & H22)

Benefits of material: Lightweight, corrosion- resistant, durable, can be left untreated

Thickness: 2/ 2,5/ 3 mm

Quantity: 500 tons

The 74,000m² Amager Bakke facade has been designed to change the image of the waste treatment plant. The continuous façade comprises 1.2m tall and 3.3m wide aluminum modules stacked like gigantic bricks and balconies overlapping with each other. Windows in between these modules face an interior atrium. As a result, the plant seems to be covered by a vertical green facade when viewed from a distance. The "bricks" were originally planned to be made of 5 mm thick aluminium plates, but in cooperation with the facade builder we were able to scale down the thickness to 2, 2.5 and 3 mm by using a stronger material version, thereby dramatically saving material usage and costs – without compromising stability and durability of the facade.

The Amager Bakke plant is located next to the marina in an industrial area close to Copenhagen city. It has become a new destination combining community and leisure with sustainable ambitions, aligning with Copenhagen’s goal of becoming the world’s first carbon-neutral city by 2025 – and it´s now well-known as "CopenHill".

Visitors are able to enjoy the views of Copenhagen and southern Sweden at the top of the 90m-high building through the vantage point. They can also ski down the 1,500m-long green, blue and black pistes of varying skill levels.

Amager Bakke converts 440,000 tons of waste annually into enough clean energy to deliver electricity and district heating for 150,000 homes using the latest equipment and technologies including flue gas condensation and heat pumps to achieve a total energy efficiency rating of 107%. The rating is a 25% increase in efficiency over the existing facility and the highest in the world for a waste-to-energy facility.

The BIG-Designed Copenhill / Amager Bakke has won the prestigious World Building Of The Year Award for 2021.
