Speira accelerates the transformation of its operations

  • Speira’s announced acquisition of Real Alloy Europe advances with definitive agreement by Aurea SA to acquire mandated divestment business
  • Speira to invest around 30 million € in recycling capacities at Rheinwerk
  • Speira to fully ramp down smelting operations at its Rheinwerk facility

Grevenbroich, March 9, 2023: On March 8, 2023, Aurea SA signed a definitive agreement to acquire a standalone business consisting of Real Alloy’s facilities in Sainte-Menehould, France, and Swansea, United Kingdom, a divestment mandated by the European Commission. Speira’s previously announced acquisition of Real Alloy Europe, which would close prior to the divestment, further demonstrates Speira’s significant capital investment in support of its transformation. The closing of each transaction remains subject to regulatory approval.

Speira is accelerating its transformation to become a leading aluminium rolling and recycling company. Yesterday, Speira decided to fully ramp down the smelting operations in Rheinwerk. This decision comes with a commitment to invest around 30 million € in recycling capacities at the plant.

“The opportunity to acquire substantially all of Real Alloy Europe and the challenging circumstances on the energy market have accelerated our transformation of Speira to a pure aluminium rolling and recycling company,” says Einar Glomnes, CEO of Speira. “We are excited to commit to investing in the growth of our recycling capabilities in Rheinwerk. Within the last years Speira has already invested more than 60 million € in recycling at the Rheinwerk plant. Our investment focus going forward will be on recycling capacities and  capabilities across Speira’s plant locations.”

The ramp down of the remaining 70,000 tonnes of liquid production at the smelter is expected to occur throughout the second half of 2023 whilst continuing to further develop the site into a strong casting and recycling center in the heart of Europe.

The decision affects around 300 employees at Rheinwerk. Speira aims to find voluntary solutions for affected employees in close cooperation with employee representatives. Speira will fulfill all its contracted supplies to its customers, replacing the curtailed liquid production with external metal supplies.
